I thought you folks would be interested in this. The Chatterbox Challenge 2011 is now underway. This is a competition between chatbots.
http://www.chatterboxchallenge.com/
A chatbot is a program that can converse with a human, using typewritten English text. Its basically an AI program that can use English, and have a conversation with a human. Its an AI that can use English, but not very well yet; the present state of the art is not very advanced.
Most of these chatbots are created by a single person; a chatbot enthusiast. On a small budget.
The chatbots in this competition are prototype AIs. To make a really good chatbot requires making an intelligent program. Many of these chatbots are low-tech, and can't be extended further, but some of the chatbot creators are more ambitious, and are trying to get their chatbots to be intelligent.
A really good chatbot has to have human-level intelligence. It can't be very good without being intelligent. Maybe this is why most chatbots are not very good. Let us know what you think of them.
I'm one of the more ambitious chatbot creators. To try out my chatbot, named "Asimov", use the link above and click on "Asimov".
